The datapad had been frozen and unused for centuries, but it was not damaged. Upon returning from his trip to the Grandmother with Druffin and Meego, Itacil immediately went to Asa to share what he had found and to attempt to repair it. He sensed that there was something crucial on this datapad for their stay on Ator Hollos.
Upon entering the monastery's workshop he saw that Yasra was there too and helping Asa with repairs.
"I hope I'm not bothering you two right now. While we were out on the Grandmother, I found this datapad and thought you could have a look at it, Master Asa"
said the young initiate.
"I ain't no master, Itacil. Let me have a look. I've done stuff like this with broken ones but never frozen"
Asa replied, raising his eyebrows and fiddling around with the datapad.
"Show me that thing, while living on Nar Shaddaa I've come across every sort of destroyed datapad.β
Yasra interjected while checking out the device.
βAnd not to brag about it, I've repaired all of them"
After some time connecting the cables and repairing circuits, Yasra threw the datapad in Itacil's direction, confident that he would catch it, even though he was blind. After he caught it, she approached him, nudged him with her elbow, and said proudly.
"I told you so! Let's go, I got this thing. Itacil, look at that baby."
"Yasra, you're the best! Ahhhh, I gotta go and take it to Master Aemos. He needs to see this!"
Itacil gushed in excitement.
"Mister Asa, Yasra, thank you for your help. I owe you two a big one!"
he said while leaving the workshop and running like a little weasel through the corridors of the monastery.
Itacil arrived at the usual garden entrance where Master Aemos would typically meditate or study old scriptures. Itacil felt his Master's presence and picked up the pace, eager to share what he had found.
However, as he ran through the entrance to the garden, he tripped over a stone and went flying into the air, losing his balance and the datapad. Fortunately, something caught him mid-air
"Countless times I've told you not to run in these halls, or someone will get hurt"
Master Aemos said sternly as he held Itacil aloft with the Force, and gently placed him on the ground.
"I can sense that you're excited. What is it, Itacil?"
Gasping for air, Itacil turned to his Master and extended his arm, holding a datapad.
"I found this in a cave during our last trip to the Grandmother, Master Aemos. There was a frozen corpse of what I believe to be a Jedi Knight. He had this datapad under his robes, as well as an old lightsaber. I felt something drawing me towards it and advising me to take it with me."
With curiosity written all over his face Master Aemos took the datapad and read the entries on it. He was excited but also concerned, as they proved that there had been force users on the planet for a long time.
One of the entries read as follows:
CSC 7676. At least, that's what year it was when we first came to this wretched place. I have lost track now.
This is Carse Estellion. I used to be a Jedi. I have no right to that claim now.
I am dying. I accepted a bargain I shouldn't have, trying to delay what was coming. I was weak. I betrayed everything I stood for. But now I've strayed too far away from the citadel, trying to get away from it all. The 'gift' is sapping my life. If I don't return, it will take everything I have, and leave me a corpse. Good riddance, I say. Passing into the Force is my final honor, one I hardly deserve.
We came here as six. Ozar Rakat convinced us to come, to join him on a well-meaning crusade. He had read about a Jedi who defied their council and came here long ago to find a great darkness. They were never heard from again. He was convinced we could pick up where they left off.
We were poor excuses for Jedi. We wanted adventure, to do something great for the Jedi Order. We were fools.
We lost our first friend during the crash. The native creatures--the Atori--took us in for a time, but as Rakat's loyalties drifted, they hid themselves away. We went looking, and couldn't find them. Then, one-by-one, we fell. Seduced into darkness, driven mad by desperation, tricked and conned and lied to. Angry and afraid. Decieved. He deceived us! He decieved me. And now I'm the last to go. At least that thing in the depths can't use my soul for food. That's my one consolation.
If you've found this, you're stranded here like we were. There's little hope for you, I'm sorry to say. Hide, flee, find some way to survive. Or maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the corruption is not yet irreversible. It's hard to imagine, right now, starving and freezing. It's hard to believe. But maybe there's hope.
For Light and Life. May the Force be with you.
"Itacil, this changes a lot. I have to take this datapad to the other masters to discuss what this means for us and for the monastery. You did well. We will talk about the lightsaber at another time"
the Master said to Itacil while on his way into the monastery's halls.
