Meego hated heights. He also hated stairs. Even worse, he hated slippery stairs with the wind threatening to send him careening down into oblivion. What had Noko said to him before sending him on this field trip: “I must not fear, fear is the mind killer?” No? Perhaps not. Either way, it didn’t matter, Meego was still afraid, afraid to even put one foot on the stone steps that led into the valley far below. He shook his head and sniffed with his snout. One of the other initiates had said that helped him. Then, he put his foot out and stepped onto the staircase only to slip on the ice and tumble down the staircase. At last he landed in a pile of snow at one of the landings. Meego lay curled up in a ball. Then he unfolded himself and looked up nervously unsure of where he was. He slowly got up and tested the ground. It was solid this time, just snow. He sighed and then sneezed. It echoed throughout the vale; Rodians sneeze very loudly. Meego looked about. At the opposite end of the steep and slippery stairs that he’d just fell down, there was an ancient wooden gate.

Was this from one of the many cultures that had been shipwrecked here, Meego wondered. The gate didn’t seem very forthcoming with any answers. Meego carefully walked over to it. Nervously, and while holding onto the gate, he looked down the next set of stairs. This set was infinitely less steep, mountain climbing wasn’t required to ascend them. Additionally at this point, an ancient culture had turned this face of the mountain into a terrace farm. After Meego had spent an hour or so taking notes on the area, making sure to not let his notes be taken by the fierce wind, or to slip and fall again. He sighed and shivered. Slowly, but steadily, he climbed his way back up the staircase. Then, he slipped, his hand not grabbing on fast enough. He squealed as he fell back to the bottom again.

A few hours later…

The sun was beginning to set over the valley, then just as the sun faded behind a pair of rose-coloured clouds, a pair of hands could be seen at the ledge. Meego hauled himself up the last step and then lay sprawled on the ground, panting and coughing. He had done it. He smiled to himself. On a parapet in the ancient monastic complex, a figure could be seen smiling at the distant rodian; she was proud of him.
