Luke Skywalker's first Jedi Academy, founded only a few months after the Battle of Endor, was situated amidst the jungles and ancient Massassi temples of Yavin IV. The Jedi Praxeum - home to a few dozen students - was Luke's first attempt at raising a new generation of Jedi, and while this endeavor had its share of successes and failures, the Academy eventually lost a student - Desann - to the Dark Side. Desann was exiled from the Praxeum for causing the death of another student, and in the months following his departure, the former Jedi Padawan joined Imperial Remnant leader Galak Fyarr. Together, the two used the fabled Valley of the Jedi to create dozens of artificially-Force Sensitive warriors, the Reborn. With the help of Fyarr's troops and his new dark side acolytes, Desann led an assault on his former Master's academy. 
Many students died horribly in the fighting, including padawans like Kanora Lorot (pictured). The Attack on the Yavin Praxeum was a major tragedy for the New Jedi Order, and a wake-up call for Luke himself.

The Praxeum fell silent in the years that followed. The Jedi Knights who had trained there scattered across the galaxy, and Luke himself went searching for answers about how best to lead the new generation of Jedi. Eventually, over two years later, Luke called the remaining Jedi together to form two new Academies led by his former students, this time better hidden and prepared for the possibility of attack from their enemies. The attack also changed the operational philosophy of the Jedi Order; no longer public figures with well-known connections to the New Republic, the Order became more independent and secretive. Members concealed their identities as Jedi to the public, and the locations of the Enclaves became a closely guarded secret shared only with trusted allies. While their connections to the New Republic remained strong, the Jedi no longer served the will of the Republic Senate. Rather than a government, they chose to serve the people of the Galaxy, seeking in every situation to bring about justice and peace according to the will of the Force.
