I met my contact at the old factory as per his instructions. “The old factory” I thought to myself. Interesting to hear one of the locals call it that. That’s what we in the Academy had named it all those years ago. Of course it wasn’t being used even back then. Some of the cadets threw a rave here a couple of times. The Empire owned so many derelict buildings on Arkanis, the higher ups wouldn’t have cared if we’d burned the place down. I don't remember it smelling any different either. The stench of stagnant water permeated throughout the facility.

I turned my attention back to the Weequay beside me. “This place used to run on water,” he explained. “80% hydro powered. Can’t say that for a lot of the industry here on Arkanis. The set up costs are just too high…”

“It rains enough to pay for itself, I imagine” I interjected.

“Yeah…” he said slowly. “Like I said, since I bought it off the New Republic at auction it’s just sat here.”

We’d danced around the question for long enough. “Mr. Torval, do you know what it is, the Empire used to do here?” I asked.

His eyes shifted slightly but his stoic expression remained unchanged.

“Well, I’ve heard things over the years. Rumour was that they’d take prisoners up here. Run experiments on em, that sort of thing.”

I let the silence hang in the air.

“Wasn’t uncommon to hear screaming coming from here sometimes,” he continued. “Like someone was in pain.”

I nodded and pulled a pouch of credits from my coat pocket. “I’ll take it.”

Cautiously, the Weequay took the payment and pocketed it. “Didn’t know the Empire was in the business of buying back their own property” he remarked.

“Well, we’re not but it never hurts to have an ally on the ground.”

He acknowledged the statement and began his descent down the ladder.

“Oh and the screaming you heard before?” I called after him. “That won’t be a problem from now on.”

The recovered Project Harvester data had yielded some exciting results. It was time to test some of them.

I tapped my comlink for a report.

“All core systems are operational,” the technician’s voice crackled through.

“Excellent,” I said. “Bring in the subject.”

Really nice build and wonderful story - but some edits really would have sold the atmosphere more!
