MC85 Heavy Cruiser: Dawn of Prosperity
The latest in Mon Calamari naval technology, the vaunted MC85 Heavy Cruiser Dawn of Prosperity finally joins the ranks of the New Republic Third Fleet, assuming the role of flagship, and becoming a powerful deterrent against the threats of Imperial Remnants.
Built by the renowned Mon Calamari Shipyards, the MC85 Star Cruiser represents the the pinnacle of Mon Cala engineering. One of the most potent and capable vessels in the New Republic fleet, these ships possess a powerful hyperdrive, advanced shield system, and a high degree of automation, easing manpower requirement on the fledgling New Republic navy. The Dawn of Prosperity is the second ship in the line, and has been allocated to the New Republic's renowned Third Fleet, under the command of the legendary Admiral Ackbar, to maintain Republic influence in the contested mid-rim.
Unlike its sister ship, the earlier, prototypical, Dawn of Tranquility, this ship incorporates some improvements on the original design. The experimental hyperdrive system has been modified to facilitate easier mass-production, while the shielding, fire control systems and life support have also been updated, to maintain compatibility with the navy's fleet of smaller vessels. The ship still retains the DoT's distinctive ion scoop particle collector; developed by the Corellian Engineering Corporation, this device helps the ship's energy efficiency, boosting its speed, endurance and warfighting capability.

Design process:
I begun building this model back in April, originally intending to make one of the background ships from RotJ. Eventually, a bunch of creative liberties that I took with that model resulted in something that begun to resemble the Raddus, from The Last Jedi. As that was one of my favourite SW ship designs, I decided to roll with that, and eventually created the V1.0 model of the MC85:
This ship, although I was still rather happy with the result, had a number of problems. the first was the the engines were attached to the angled upper panel at the rear, so they were mounted at a downward angle - a negligible angle, but still inaccurate nonetheless. More jarringly, the panels around the particle collector weren't fully accurate to the source material as they lacked the gaps along the sides, while the collector itself did have the correct angles. Worst of all, the thing was packed full of illegal builds, had some cobbled together areas on the underside which didn't look great, and the structural stability was terrible. The stand had a habit for breaking, and it was a pain to move the model. To demonstrate, here are some interior shots of the V1.0 model:
For the V2.0, I tried to rectify these problems - these image show most of the improvements.
- Red: redesigned the lower panel under the lower bridge - it now has a shallower angle and is detached from the particle collector segment.
- Orange: changed the particle collector - colour is now DBG for accuracy, with angled plates and a shallower curvature.
- Blue: added the gaps in the panels.
- Yellow: integrated stand.
- Purple: updated greebling on underside for added accuracy.
- Green: removed plates with brackets, for a smooth stud-free underside, and far more stable construction.
- Light blue: better, and more stable engine arrangement, now attached level with the rest of the model.
- Yellow: removed wedge plates with SNOT slopes, to remove studs.
- Black: integrated carry handle (it's swooshable).
- Dark green: used grille slopes and SNOT for a smoother finish.
- Magenta: redid the front section for added accuracy to the source ship's shape, and to represent the upper bridge.
Additionally, the new model has a technic frame - integrated to the stand and carry handle, meaning that it's incredibly stable and can be picked up - with reasonable caution - from any part of the model, without risking damaging the model.
