In the middle of a tiny tan island no bigger than a cafeteria tray, under the shade of a green palm, sat a lonely Gonk droid. His boxy frame was scuffed. One leg clicked when he moved. His voice module , barely working, emitted a soft, irregular gonk every few minutes, like a sigh.

And next to him… sat Mark.

Mark, the coconut.

He didn’t talk. He didn’t move. But to the Gonk, Mark was more than just a decorative fruit.

He was a friend.

-

It hadn’t always been this way.

The Gonk had once belonged to the bustling Commuter Rail Station in the city of Gaiv raij on the Planet Atravis

That was before the Red Moons came.

Terrorists, anarchists, outcasts , the Red Moons launched attack that brought chaos into his world. Even the once-dominant Ashlon, planetary overseer and technocrat king, couldn't stop the sky from bleeding. Gonk had barely survived, flung from the exploding rail hub, swept by a wave of collapsing infrastructure, then tossed into the sea like forgotten debris.

When he awoke, he was here, on this bizarrely perfect, flat island in the middle of the ocean. And there, perched beside him beneath the palm, was Mark.

-

Weeks passed.

Gonk didn’t know how many. Time melted in the bright, simulated sky. Occasionally, he’d whisper to Mark.

“Why do they fight, Mark?”

Mark said nothing.

“Do you think Ashlon is still alive?”

Nothing.

“Do we have... purpose?”

Still nothing.

But the silence wasn’t empty. It was... patient. Listening. Mark never judged Gonk’s low battery anxiety or his existential loops. He just smiled. That same dumb coconut grin. And somehow, it helped.

-

One night , or what he imagined as night, since the sun never moved, the Gonk beeped louder than usual.

“Mark... what if we’re the last ones? What if this is all that’s left of Atravis?”

Mark stared, unblinking.

The Gonk looked up at the palm tree,  and something stirred in his old circuits. Not fear. Not hope. Something simpler.

Acceptance.

He wasn’t built for war. He wasn’t designed to lead. But here, on this silly little island, with Mark by his side, he wasn’t just a forgotten droid.

He was... someone.

Mission: None
Companion: Mark
Reflection: “We are small. We are simple. But we are still here.”

Gonk.
