After the Republic's crisis over Gyndine, hundreds had been reported missing or dead. Many of those who had gone missing had been sold off to the criminal syndicates as entertainment. 

The Sootkeepers were comprised of Valrum the captain (centre-down), Leo the markswoman (right), Milrush the Wildcard (centre-top) and Milrush's pet Sarapin Rat Gertrum and his repurposed heavy droid (left). Before each tournament the group had pledged themselves to the living force, begging for a second chance. Legend has it the force spoke back.
