Protectorate of Kalarba - Interlude

For the first time since arriving in the Hevvrol Sector, Captain Alexander Rheiker has been ordered to do something completely unrelated to the war against piracy and organized crime: take some time off. He travels to one of Kalarba’s premier seaside resorts, a glittering retreat built along the planet’s tropical coastline where Imperial officials, merchants, and wealthy travelers come to escape the demands of galactic affairs.

Rheiker is joined by Toreya Buran, his trusted contact from Tirac Munda and the relationship that has gradually become something more than business. Alongside them are Agent Faro and members of Wraith Squad, taking advantage of the rare opportunity to relax away from their duties, and 4D1-RA-7, who has apparently decided that even a vacation requires proper scheduling and organization. For once, none of them are carrying orders or chasing down insurgents.

With luxury speeders passing overhead, music drifting from the resort district, and the Kalarban sea stretching out before them, Rheiker begins to realize just how badly he needed the break.

For Toreya, the trip is an opportunity to see Rheiker without the uniform and constant pressure of his position. The two spend much of the evening together, their growing relationship becoming increasingly difficult to hide.

For a few hours, the problems of Tirac Munda seem impossibly far away. No pirates. No syndicates. No investigations. Just the ocean, music, and the rare luxury of being ordinary.

But even in paradise, the Protectorate is never completely absent. In the distance, security patrols move through the resort streets while Imperial vessels pass overhead, reminders that Kalarba remains the center of a government fighting to maintain control across the sector. Rheiker knows that his leave will eventually end, and that his first assignment as captain, the refugee camps on Kalarba, is waiting for him.

For tonight, however, none of that matters. Captain Rheiker raises a glass with Toreya as the music continues behind them. The campaign can wait until morning.

For once, the galaxy can save itself.
