Faction Creation

Factions rise and fall throughout the Star Wars timeline. Once players reach 200 XP, they are eligible to become a Faction Leader, and start a new faction. Follow these steps to create a new faction.

Check with your Game Master

Your GM may have insights or considerations for the timing of your new faction, or how your new faction could fit in among the existing factions in the game.

Choose Origin System

Choosing your origin system decides where on the galaxy map your faction starts and operates from. You could consider this system your faction’s capital, headquarters, or base of operation.

Campaign Setting & Era

Era: 5 ABY, after the Battle of Jakku

Canon: Factions S3 will be rooted in Star Wars canon, but allows for builders to tell their own stories, intertwined with events on the canon timeline. That means that all canon events are expected to take place simultaneously to what happens in Factions. Some of these events could be featured as challenges and events, while others will happen in the background.

NPC Factions

NPC (Non-Player Character) factions exist to enrich the game world and support Game Masters in driving the narrative, while maintaining consistency with the established canon.

They also serve as tools for Faction Leaders to explore new strategies, forge alliances, or create conflict as they pursue their objectives.

How Do Faction Leaders Interact with NPC Factions?

Faction Leaders can interact with NPC factions much like they would with any other player faction. Agreements can involve transactions, services, ship transfers, or even the transfer of influence points (IP) on eligible systems.

Players may also choose to build on behalf of an NPC faction—if agreed upon by both the Faction Leader and the NPC Leader. Doing so can directly bolster an NPC fleet’s influence. Compensation from the NPC faction is common, though not guaranteed.

Communicating with NPC Leaders

Faction Leaders and their Second-in-Command can contact NPC factions by reaching out to the appropriate NPC Leader on Discord. If the NPC Leader is perceived to have a conflict of interest—such as due to involvement with their own player faction—another NPC Leader may be contacted instead.

Major NPC Factions

New Republic (NPC Leader: Darth Bjorn)

The New Republic is the galaxy’s democratic cornerstone, striving to maintain peace, safety, and freedom in civilized space. While it prefers diplomacy and bureaucracy, the Republic will not hesitate to unleash overwhelming force in response to aggression—especially in the Inner Rim and occasionally beyond, into the Mid Rim or Expansion Region.

Imperial Remnant (NPC Leader: Ryan)

Once mighty, now fractured, the remnants of the Galactic Empire are scattered and diminished. Some seek to rebuild the Empire, while others simply crave power. They act cautiously to avoid New Republic attention, but remain bold against smaller adversaries. Their ranks are filled with ambition, arrogance, and the ever-present risk of infighting.

Cartels and Syndicates (NPC Leader: Drunknpirate)

The criminal underworld operates in the gray zones of galactic law. The motives of various syndicates and cartels often seem enigmatic, but wealth is a consistent driving force behind their deception and violence. Offending a syndicate may cost you a fortune—or your life.

Local Security Forces (NPC Leader: Drunknpirate)

These forces are primarily focused on defending their homeworlds. However, during times of peace, they may offer assistance to others—for the right price. Many of these groups were once loyal to the Empire but have since shifted allegiance under New Republic governance.

Disputes & Oversight

NPC Leaders are expected to act in alignment with the values and motivations of their respective factions. If a Faction Leader believes an NPC is acting out of character or unfairly, they may challenge the action. In such cases, other NPC Leaders will review and evaluate the dispute.

If needed, the Game Master may intervene to resolve any inconsistencies or disputes regarding NPC behavior.

NPC Fleets

NPC fleets operate similarly to player-controlled fleets but are managed by their respective NPC Leaders.

If an NPC fleet is set to engage in an event involving the player faction of its NPC Leader, another neutral NPC Leader will step in to control the NPC faction during that event to ensure impartiality.
