Description
Commanded by the legendary Admiral Gial Ackbar, the New Republic Third Fleet is the military arm of the New Republic in the galactic south. While the Fleet ultimately serves at the discretion of the Senate, wide latitude is given in dealing with anti-Concordance Imperials, pirates, and other scum & villainy in the region. The Fleet has also been tasked with training up planetary security forces, in the hopes that they will be able to shoulder much of the military load now that the main elements of the Empire have been beaten down; protecting trade in the region; and assisting in diplomatic missions to independent polities.
Organization and Operation
While Third Fleet is primarily a naval organization, built around powerful capital ships, there are many supporting and attached forces. Starfighter Command’s Third Wing oversees the squadrons operating with the Fleet, while units from the Second Rim Army provide ground forces for occupations, assaults, and base security. A seasoning of fleet security personnel and SpecForces feature as shipboard muscle, and a host of logistics personnel and civilian contractors feed, clothe, and arm this beacon of liberation.
Background, Origin, and History
Founded in the chaotic period between the battles of Yavin and Hoth, Third Fleet operated as a roving hammer in the galactic south. Over the following months, everything from obsolete pre-Clone Wars starfighters to modern frigates stolen right off the slips were added to the fleet’s roster. Just before Endor, it came under the personal command of Gial Ackbar, who led the fleet to several critical victories above the forest moon, Jakku, and Coruscant.
Now, just a year after Endor, many of the ships in Third Fleet are the same vessels used during the Galactic Civil War, ranging from tiny gunships and corvettes to multiple-kilometer long Mon Calamari cruisers. Home Fleet and Starhawk Command have first call on newer ships from the Core worlds, so securing local shipyards will be an important step. While Admiral Ackbar holds command of Third Fleet, he remains in the Core worlds for now, where the majority of the fleet is still undergoing repairs and refit in proper shipyards after Jakku. Local command of the fleet units currently operational is seconded to Commodore Low Varr, operating out of a refurbished and expanded starfighter base on Dalastine.
