canon

Star Wars Factions has been grounded in the official Star Wars Canon from the beginning, but this community that has been sharing stories with one another for over five years, and we try to make the most of creative freedom in the galaxy far, far away. The Factions community typically creates additions and changes, rather than subtractions, to existing Canon, many of which are based on the Expanded Universe (or Legends). This allows us to keep a degree of general consistency with each new Star Wars project. This all means that Factions has, over time, built out in significant ways, enough so that it’s become worthwhile to explain the differences. Our hope is to keep telling stories that enrich the Star Wars galaxy, and like so many others, enjoy playing in this world that has brought so much joy to us all.

The Star Wars Factions Role Playing Game takes place in 10 ABY, roughly concurrent with the Disney+ show, The Mandalorian.

Anything considered Star Wars canon preceding 10 ABY is considered Factions canon as well. From this point forward anything can happen in the Factions RPG. This means that the events of any Star Wars media set after 10 ABY (like The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, The Rise of Skywalker, and the animated series Resistance) have not happened yet, and depending on the stories you tell, might happen in a completely different way, if at all. Future events, as outside the scope of the game timeline, will rarely come up, and we want to always tell our stories with respect to other storytellers, whether that’s other players or official writers and directors, but freedom to create is our top priority. The destiny of the Star Wars galaxy is in your hands, the builders, and your Factions.

What is the difference between official Star Wars canon, and SWFactions canon?

While there are many events, large and small, unique to the timeline of SWFactions, here are a few of the broad differences between official Canon and the Canon of the game.

  • Imperial Remnants are stronger and more numerous, and continue to control regions of the galaxy. Some of the largest include the former Triumvirate, the Imperial Consortium, and the Pentastar Alignment.
  • Luke Skywalker built a Jedi Praxeum on Yavin IV in 6 ABY (as in the EU). After its destruction at the hands of a failed student, Luke went searching for old wisdom in places like Pillio and Ossus. With the help of his remaining students, the Jedi founded two new secret enclaves in 12 ABY; neither of which were led by Luke. The Grandmaster instead constructed a temple on Ossus for a future academy (as seen in TBoBF), and spent his time focusing on galactic-scale Jedi matters, as well as recruiting the occasional gifted student.
  • Many Mandalorian clans continue to persist in secret following the Purge of Mandalore. After the Battle of Jakku, some clans (such as Clan Eldar) rose to new prominence in the galaxy, establishing independent fiefdoms and fighting against remnants of the Empire. Several clans have now united to reform the ancient Mando’ade.
  • As in Canon, the New Republic enacted the Galactic Concordance and reduced its military strength, but due to the continued threats across the galaxy, maintains a well-trained and well-funded force of skilled career soldiers, volunteers, and ace starfighter pilots.
