Episode III: Epilogue

Epilogue

The smoldering hulk that was once the Grysk Temple ship lay broken across the basin of Bassoet, a fitting visual to symbolize the outcome after days of fighting: complete and total victory.

Hundreds of varieties of starships filled the skies. Transports, many of them carrying wounded, hummed overhead, flying in every direction. Fighters skimmed the messa, triumphant pilots doing victory laps in T-65Bs, Scyk Snubfighters, and TIE interceptors. The ground troops cheered every time one of them buzzed the FOBs, and trash-talked about who flew best.
Up past the fighters and transports, the capital ships loomed in the upper atmosphere. Mon Cala cruisers and Imperial II-class star destroyers–each emblazoned with one of three or four different insignias, depending on which Remnant they belonged to–sat like huge storm clouds, sharing space with pirate frigates, old militia Separatist dreadnaughts, and Mandalorian Clanships.

For New Republic Corporal Pana Telle, it was like nothing she’d ever seen.

She sat at a bonfire on a ridge overlooking the basin, resting with a few dozen other fighters from a scattering of factions while they waited for transport back to the city. The natural tension between them all had dissipated a few hours into the battle. The natural effect of fighting a common enemy. Now they were catching their breath, talking, laughing, drinking from flasks, or staring into space. Corporal Telle sat next to a Stormtrooper who was losing his lunch into his own helmet. She knew his name; Renlor. He was part of the Imperial Consortium, had never seen combat before. He saved her from a berserker in an alley, and she’d given him a stim to help fight off the panic attack that followed. Now she leaned over and patted him on the back.

The irony of it wasn’t lost on her.

This coalition was an unprecedented event. A fighting force unlike any the galaxy had ever seen, and–thank the Force–it had been enough to break the power of the Scaoth threat on Ra’un. It was a battle worthy of writing songs about, if there were still people who did that sort of thing. Maybe the Mandalorians, she thought, and glanced at one sitting nearby. He was steadfastly ignoring the ‘Glory Days’ raid stories of the drunk pirate beside him, entirely intent on sharpening his vibrosword to fix the nicks left in it by Scaoth armor.

The people of this world were free. All of the people the Scaoth had kidnapped, the Missing, would be given everything they needed to heal and return home, as would an entire generation of Ra’uni who had known nothing but an enslaved existence under the Horde. Telle had seen a few of them during the fight in Vos Pilati–you could see a lifetime of anger in each one. The fate of any Scaoth prisoners would be up to them to decide. She almost pitied them. Not quite, but almost.

Elsewhere, in the liberated city of Jol Laxus, an Imperial medic helped an injured Freedom Fighter off an assault tank to be treated at a triage camp. As they hobbled along with the medic supporting the rebel’s weight, they passed a figure standing on the parapets, watching the pillars of smoke rise in every direction, and the blazing orange sky finally give way to night. They barely noticed him–he didn’t look significant, just a cloaked man off on his own–but in truth, he was the reason they were here. That any of them were here. He was the one known as the Presager, the Chiss outcast Elush’air’ovmior.

The cooperation that took place on Ra’un was not as strange to his eyes as it was to the factions themselves. He had never before visited their worlds, he saw relatively few differences between them. Degrees of brutality, of course, but largely divided by their desire for power. They would have other problems, on other days. But this day was about the Scaoth, and the fruit of their unique compromise. For Shairo, this day was about the death of the thing that had haunted him since he was a child.

“In all my visions, I saw no outcome so sweet as this.”

He said the words to himself. For nearly his entire life, every sleeping moment had been plagued by the presence of the Scaoth–always waiting and preparing, worming their way into every part of the galaxy like an invisible terror. But now, as he watched their power break, all the darkness that had filled his head for so many years seemed to fade away, and he fell to his knees and wept.

He would quietly slip away in the hours that followed. Whether he traveled now in search of peace or a new purpose, even he did not know. But for the first time, he was free to choose.

Throughout the entire region of Exuji, coalition troops–Republic, Imperial, pirates, and regular volunteers alike–were raising the victory cry. For a brief few hours, their rivalries were almost forgotten. The next time many of them met, it would be as foes. But tonight, they celebrated as comrades, fellow victors, and friends.

Aftermath

Scaoth

The Scaoth force at Ra’un was shattered, but during the fighting, one of the Zhra’ad Princes managed to escape into the darkness of the Unknown Regions. The Horde will never rise to their former strength, not for decades, if at all, but it would be unwise to lower one’s guard completely–the Scaoth have nothing if not the will to survive at any cost. Those who live on the galactic frontier would do well to keep an eye toward unknown space.

The UniStar Conglomerate

Unistar, as expected, denied any involvement with the Scaoth cult. Those without plausible deniability were given up by the company, which quickly put as much distance as possible between themselves and any evidence of wrongdoing. As slippery as they are, they cannot escape scot-free; their reputation and operations will doubtlessly suffer in the wake of the Battle of the Ra’un. The observant citizens of the galaxy–and the senate–know their true colors. Their reach will be limited, and they will not soon be trusted again.

Affiliate Region Access Closure

In the wake of the Scaoth Crisis, the office of the Chancellor leads the Senate in a motion to pass the Affiliate Region Access Closure act, which will limit previously unrestricted travel for starfleets in and around the Core Worlds in order to mitigate future conflict and provide individual member systems with a greater sense of security. The Imperial Remnant, with the closest territory to the Unknown Regions, implements their own travel restrictions, requiring new clearances of Starfleets in their regions. Eager to punish UniStar and corporations like it, the Syndicates follow suit with a similar set of rules. Military movements must now be conducted per the normal requirements of movement through non-affiliated regions.

GAME RULE CHANGE: The following rule is being removed from the SWFactions rules. Going forward, access in all areas of the map will be based on those existing access rules which are unrelated to Affiliate Region Access.

Affiliate Region Access: There are four Regions, New RepublicImperial RemnantCrime Syndicate, and Uncontrolled Territory (which consists of many sub groups). If a Faction is affiliated with the New Republic, they may travel freely and access any system within the New Republic regions. If a Faction is affiliated with a criminal organization, they may travel freely and access any System within Crime Syndicate Space. If a Faction is affiliated with the Imperial Remnant, they may travel freely and access any System within the Imperial Remnant. If a Faction is not affiliated with any of the groups above, they may travel freely and access any System within the Uncontrolled Territory where they claimed their initial 50 IP.
